With the intention of making bike maintenance more accessible so people can achieve sustainable and independent transportation, students from SCARP (UBC) organized this event. My colleague and I guided a workshop as part of the program. Our goal was to bring people together, teaching an easy technique to reuse found materials and transform them into useful accessories for their bikes.
The event include a few rotating breakout sessions:
•Basic bike maintenance (flat tire fix + safety check)
• Community route mapping and sharing tips for biking in Vancouver
• “Yassify your bike.”

• “Yassify your bike.”
We first designed a net that we wanted to teach how to make, considering the difficulty and the amount of material we had.
We provided each of the participants with a bundle of elastic necessary to make their own net, and we had cards with the main knot drawn on them for reference.
Beads and colorful thread to personalized the nets.
Each participant left with their own net to install on their bike.
Overall, it was a great experience. Being able to teach something to someone is a great feeling. It was interesting to see how nine adults would sit around a table for two hours straight, completely focused on crafting, and how the conversation naturally flowed. It confirmed our idea that building community through common interests and "making" is a very effective approach.
It was also valuable to work with people who bring different skills to the table. As only one of us was a mechanic and able to handle the bike maintenance, the workshop created a good flow; people could stay focused on the craft while waiting for the mechanic to be available, still feeling like they were getting something valuable out of the event.
